Do you struggle to fall asleep? To sleep deeply? To awake feeling rested? Sleep is one of THE most important factors in our overall wellbeing and health. But as our lives get busier and busier, our to-do lists get longer and longer, we can find ourselves lying in bed wide awake with the hustle and bustle of life filling our minds. We all know we need to try and get the best amount of sleep for our bodies and mind to run efficiently and for us to be healthy. However, certain points in our life we may not be able to increase the amount of sleep we are having for various reasons, but by trying to increase the efficiency of the sleep we can move one step closer to feeling rested.
We have a simple breathing technique below to relax the body and mind before we sleep.
- Make sure you are comfortable and cosy in your bed. Lie on your back and place one hand on your chest and one hand on your abdomen. - Breathe in deeply and slowly through your nose into your abdomen (we want the abdomen to rise before the chest, to ensure deep and relaxing breath). - Then exhale slowly out of your mouth, focusing on the sound of your breath the entire time. - Keep repeating this; you should feel your body relax, your heart rate will slow and your body will be able to release the days tension. This allows us to drift into a deep and peaceful sleep. Be patient if you are trying this for the first time, keep practicing this regularly before sleep and you will reap the benefits. Let us know if you try this and how you get on. Happy sleeping everyone!
